BSNL and MTNL are the only two state owned networks and many Indians use these networks. Sources claim that Niti Aayog may consider these state owned networks for strategic disinvestment.
The current government has blamed the Congress party for the financial decline of the two network providers. Former telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said before 2004, BSNL and MTNL were making profits around Rs 10,000 crore and Rs 900 crore respectively.
When NDA assumed the power the BSNL was suffering a loss of Rs 8,000 crore and MTNL was suffering Rs 2,000. The Niti Aayog has submitted a list of 74 stagnated and loss making public sector undertakings to shut them down to cut losses.
They were also considering to reconstruct these undertakings. The official said that discussions were taking place between ministries for the final details. The official disclosed Air Inida was also a part of the list which was submitted by Niti Aayog to the Centre. Niti Aayog recommended the reconstruction of the Air India public sector undertaking. Niti Aayog is a think-tank of the government of India.
